University Students' Perceptions of the Elderly and the Elderly-Friendly Industry: Target of Occupational Therapy

Abstract
Objective : It aims to contribute to the vitalization and development of the aged-friendly industry through research on the perception of the aged-friendly industry and the elderly according to the general characteristics of students in occupational therapy departments who will become professionals in the aged-friendly industry in line with the aging era.

Methods : This study conducted a questionnaire survey for 136 students enrolled in the Department of Occupational Therapy in Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Gyeongbuk from March 20 to April 20, 2020 to understand the perception of the elderly-friendly industry and the elderly. Implemented.
General characteristics of the subjects 8 questions, the recognition of the elderly and aging-friendly industry was consisted of 10 questions, respectively.

Results : Occupational therapy students showed positive perceptions in both the psychological and physical areas of the elderly's perceptions, but showed a low score of 3.0 or less in the family relations area. In addition, the perception of other senior citizens was also positive in the students' personal variables (whether there is an elderly person, use of aged-friendly services, clinical practice). However, there was no difference between clinical practice and perception of the elderly. Positive responses were shown in the outlook, education, and necessity of the aged-friendly industry.

Conclusion : This study investigated differences in perception of the elderly according to individual variables of occupational therapy students. In addition, we have seen the necessity and the possibility of revitalization of the aged-friendly industry, and intend to use it as basic data for the future role and prospect of occupational therapists.
